Welcome to Day 5 of the Moda Designer's Blog Hop - M, N, O.
As you probably know by now, each designer has a letter you can download and all together make a really neat alphabet quilt. (Be sure to back up if you just got here and want them all.)
And the letter they have usually goes with their name or something they do.
My name is Jan Patek and my company name is
Jan Patek Quilts
so my letter is
When I got the email from Lissa saying my letter was "O", I emailed back
sooooo…. does O stand for Old? :)
I am the oldest designer.
My husband said it might stand for Omniscient
or Omnipotent
But I stuck with Old :)
As you might be able to tell, I think it's funny and love to tease our fearless leader, Lissa, about it. I really enjoy being the age I am. The only problem I find with it is that sometimes my body gets cranky and thinks I should ease up on the pace a little. Silly of it!
To get the pattern for the O, click here.
Now for the questions.
My letter is…. O
What are your initials? JLP
My favorite quilt block......…. Ohio Star
My favorite book, movie or television show starting with your letter...… Over My Dead Body - a Nero Wolfe mystery novel
I love quilting because.........… Only nice people quilt - mostly
What if everyday was a holiday?...… I'd get to quilt even more
Is there an object, tool or anything that you cannot work without? Sandpaper Board
Do you have a quote or motto you live ( or work) by? ……Do unto others
Something I like...… Olives
Somewhere I have been...… Oregon
Somewhere I want to go...… Ohio - I've been there too but would like to go back - great quilting state
Someone I know…. Old McDonald - well not really, but I do live in a farming community.
As you can see, I don't always stick to the rules.
For my project using my O, I designed "O My Stars".
I just love Circle/Stars and I just love this fabric line.
To download the patterns for the project, click here.
To purchase a kit for the quilt click here.
This is Little Houses, one of my new Front Porch patterns. When we were making it, it dawned on me that there were 48 little windows on the little houses. Whew! So I found an easier way to make them. To get a tip on making all of those windows you can watch my tutorial by clicking here.
And I thought I'd give you a sneak peek at my latest fun thing!.
We're doing a dual purpose block of the month. Each month starting in March you will get an appliqué block and a log cabin block. You can use them as Table Stand blocks or sew them together to make a large quilt - or both. And you get a discount if you do both. There's more information on the side bar.

Now for the part you really came for - THE FABRIC!
Moda has generously given me a Fat 1/4 bundle of Front Porch for a prize.
Make a comment saying why you like being the age you are - "cuz its fun" will do - and we'll have the random number generator pick a winner on the 28th.
And more prizes are to be had from
so hop on over and see what they're up to.
See you on Monday.
Because now there are some opinions that do not influence as much as before and now I know who really loves me.Thanks for the fun!!
ReplyDeleteI love the age I am now because I'm retired and I can sew any time I want (almost). Also it's great being a Grandmother!
ReplyDeleteLove the fruit punch fabric, I love being the age I am because I love being a grandmother.
ReplyDeleteI love my age because I'm retired, can do what I want, spend time with my mom and hubby, but most of all spending time with my grandchildren!
ReplyDeleteI like being 60, old enough to be retired but young enough to do what I want!
ReplyDeleteI like being the age I am as this year I turn 40! And apparently life begins then, and hopefully I'll be starting my own business then too! Your O my stars quilt is fab!!
ReplyDeleteI don't really feel my age or at least I don't think I do .... how do you know what you are suppose to feel at a certain age? I loved being retired and able to do what I want.
ReplyDeleteWhile I miss my younger body, I like that I have lots of control over my life and can make choices I couldn't make when I was younger.
ReplyDeleteI love being the age I am because I'm a late bloomer...my time has come...
ReplyDeleteWell, I might like being a bit younger but I like this age because I know more than I did before.
ReplyDeleteI like my age because I can say things I shouldn't and people just smile at the silly old lady!
ReplyDeleteThis might sound odd...my mother died when she was 49 so I did not like being 49. Now that I'm 50 it's all good. Still feel like I'm much younger.
ReplyDeleteLove your O My Stars quilt. I love being retired. And when my adult kids try to plan an event, I tell them I have all the time in the world so you decide when.
ReplyDeleteI am 59 . At this point in my life I am in-between caring for children and caring for my parents. So life is good.
ReplyDeleteAt 45 all the diaper wearing kids are gone, and I don't need diapers....yet!
ReplyDeleteI'm 51 and I love that I'm young enough to enjoy most of the same things I used to and old enough to not give a darn about a lot of stuff. Thanks for the chance.
ReplyDeleteI like my age, but don't like all the aches and pains.
ReplyDeleteI like my age because if I wasn't this age I wouldn't have two wonderful great grandsons.
ReplyDeleteI can't say I'm nuts about my age, the wisdom is nice but the health issues are not for sissies.
ReplyDeleteI like being my age because I get to be a grandmother and it is a lot of fun! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm 57 - old enough to know a few things about life, but young enough to not know everything! Thanks for the chance to win some beautiful fabric!
ReplyDeleteYou might want to wait on that next visit to Ohio... it is cold and snowy here...
ReplyDeleteMy age is 65 and it is magical. I was able to retire this year and have health insurance (medicare). Life is sew good. I love applique and really appreciate your video's.
Thanks for a chance at your lovely fabric
I'm 55...double nickels according to my husband. I'm enjoying being a great Aunt!
ReplyDeleteI am 48 and enjoy not having teenagers anymore. I have more time to quilt! Your fabric is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOh dear, do I have to like being the age I am?!?!?! I actually struggled turning 35 this past year...I guess that one benefit of my age, my children are more independent and I can leave them alone without a sitter? =) Thanks for a chance to win this bundle.
ReplyDeleteI'm 36, the baby bearing years are over, the kids are all in school now, I'm enjoying getting back into work and having a day at home on my own to sew.
ReplyDeleteI love the age that I am every year, because it sure beats the alternative! It is a nice time of life--our nest is empty and we have adjusted to it. It is fun to just be a couple now and not have to worry continually about meeting needs of anyone else--if we feel like doing something, we can.
ReplyDeleteI think wisdom comes with age so I like lessons learned.
ReplyDeleteI'm 41. The kids are self sufficient, they are growing up (too fast though) They are off with their friends, can make their own dinner, and that leaves more time for meee! LOL Thanks for a fabulous giveaway!

I love my age, because I'm old enough to know better, but young enough to get things done!
ReplyDeleteI am ok with my age, but it would be nice to be a bit younger and have more time for quilting. I am retired and 72 and I do some type of quilting daily and just love it.
ReplyDeleteI love my age because retirement means more quilting time. Love the house quilt!
ReplyDeleteI love the age I am, because I've learned MUCH (don't want to go back) and still have MUCH to learn!!
ReplyDeleteAge is just a number - you are only as old as you feel. Some days I feel younger than others. I enjoy my age because I have accumulated many wonderful memories (that I can still remember, thank goodness.) I'm retired and can practically do anything I want with my time. Everyday is a Saturday! Love your fabric lines and great patterns. Your chickens sound comical on your YouTube videos!
ReplyDeleteEvery age is a great age! You earn each year and what it brings!!
ReplyDeleteIm happy the age I am because Im not too young and Im not too old. Love Front Porch. Thank you for the giveaway & pattern.
ReplyDeleteMy philosophy is you are as old as you feel. a number does not matter i am in the middle of the road but i do have gray hair but i have had it early must be in the genes. I try to enjoy each day as it comes hopefully without the creeks and groans sometimes when i get down on the floor to play with my grandkids thanks for the chance to win
ReplyDeleteI just turned 60 + I'm still waiting to feel grown up! I love being this age as I made the decision that as soon as I reached this milestone, I could start going backwards in age. Just think of all those quilts I'm going to have time to sew from now on. Thank you so much for the chance to win some of your gorgeous Front Porch range.
ReplyDeleteI am 50 and celebrated my bday with a party. Everyone wore black to mourn 50 years passed and celebrate 50 more years to come! I am fifty...I do what I want!
ReplyDeleteI don't really care about my age. It just happens that right now, I'm old enough to be able to buy my house, confident enough in my work, and still young enough to wonder about having a third child... Lovely space in time !
ReplyDeleteI love being my age because now I'm Grammy to two wonderful little gals.
ReplyDeleteI like being my age because our son is grown and on his own and my husband and I can enjoy each other's company.
ReplyDeleteI'm old enough to have gained maturity. A little anyway!
ReplyDeleteI just turned 53 yesterday so not sure what I like about this age yet. I guess that i am old enough to appreciate my blessings and not take things for granted.
ReplyDeleteAge is just a number! It's how you feel both inside and out! Being a grandmother helps to keep me young and I love every minute of it!!!
ReplyDeletePam
I'm 26. Young enough that I still have most of my life ahead of me and lots to look forward to. But old enough to have finished studying and gotten on the career ladder (I'm a qualified lawyer) so that I can afford to treat myself to lots of lovely fabric!
ReplyDeleteI am extremely happy to be the age I am because I am retiring from teaching in May. Did I say HAPPY?

ReplyDeleteMy children are grown- it's MY time to do whatever I please!
ReplyDeleteI just turned 50, and it was waaay easier than turning 30 or 40. Maybe because 'with age comes wisdom'--and it's better than the alternative!
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking part in the blog hop and the giveaway. I am 44 and I love being this age. I wasted a lot of twenties and thirties worrying about what people thought of me and trying to to do everything well. Now I have more liberty to be me and have fun learning new skills like quilting.
ReplyDeleteI just turned 50 and hopefully I am wiser than when I was younger and make fewer stupid mistakes!
ReplyDeleteSixty-one and lovin it! Have time to sit on the "front porch" and enjoy life!
ReplyDeleteI'm 67 - married nearly 50 years - and I love, love, love being this age. Oh there are drawbacks, naturally. Like creaky joints and sagging body parts. But at this age everyone thinks whatever you do is either cute or eccentric and they let you get by with it. :) Love the O My Stars - thank you for the pattern. And also love the bunnies - cute! blessings, marlene
ReplyDeleteWell I am 73 and have always loved you designs. Love houses, always a big plus in your quilts. Homespuns too. Married 57 years and my hubby is my hand quilter, how awesome is that?
ReplyDeleteMaggey
I'm 58, and have loved my fifties! I just feel more comfortable with who I am, and worry much less about what anyone thinks of me. Also, child-rearing days are behind me and I have so much more freedom (besides having to still work full-time that is). I'm hoping all of this only gets better as I move into my sixties (retirement...YAY)! You are one of my very favorite designers...thank you so much for the pattern! I have never owned a fat quarter bundle, and would LOVE to win this beautiful one!
ReplyDeleteI just turned 50 -- it is easier to say No to things I don't want to do and easier to find time for the fun things I want to do -- Love the star pattern
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
I can enjoy my quilting without interruption!
ReplyDeleteI love being 39, because it's not 40. Just kidding, seriously I like being 39 because i feel I have finally reached the age where I am not to young to do anything, and I am not to old either. I have five children, half of them are grown up already, and I finally can do things for me and my husband. At first it was hard letting them go but now I am enjoying every day as if it were my last. I love being me.
ReplyDeleteI am 62 and love being retired. I am able to do more sewing now that I dont have to go to work.
ReplyDeleteDouble nickel for me. I love my work, the only problem with working is my opportunity for quilting is limited. Someday . . .
ReplyDeleteI'm 34 years old - maybe young to some, but "super-old" to my kids! :) I like being 34 "cuz it's fun!"
ReplyDeleteLove the granchildren entering our family!
ReplyDeleteI am 44 and love it. It is a double number which means double cool!
ReplyDeleteI turn 61 in a couple of weeks and I am looking so forward to retiring in a year or so - love to quilt and I don't ever feel guilty about it anymore - mostly my time is my own.
ReplyDeleteLove that I now have time to sew and love spending time with my grandchildren:)
ReplyDeleteI like the age that I am because I am happy with my life and what I am able to do from an activity level.
ReplyDeleteI find that my priorities are so different now. Makes me happier. Age 56.
ReplyDeleteIt's fun being my age, cause I don't have to go to work anymore! Now I sew and spend time w/our grandchildren-doesn't get much better than that.
ReplyDeleteI love my life, so I guess that means I must love my age? LOL! What I do know is that I love to quilt, it brings great joy to my life.
ReplyDeleteI love the age I am (61) cuz...um...hmmm...tap-tap-tapping the ol' brain...cuz I'm retired and get to play ALL day...which means I get to QUILT ALL DAY!! Yippeee!! Thanks for the chance to win something to play WITH...LOVE Frontporch!!
ReplyDeletePaulette
Just turned 61, which, as a kid, seemed ancient, but I feel 21 and have the time to do fun things for me, and with family.
ReplyDeleteI am 80 and enjoy doing as I please. I am still active and love to bake and garden. A quilt for ggd is in progress.
ReplyDeleteI love my age 54 because I still have time to make a lot of quilts.
ReplyDeleteBecause most people think I'm several years younger than my 38 years. :)
ReplyDeleteMy age is great. Just exactly where I should be. Wish I didn't need to sleep so much.
ReplyDeleteI love my age, older, as I'm slowing down a bit and just enjoy life more. I have so many blessings to count and quilts to stitch.

ReplyDeleteI didn't really like being my age till i found out i get discounts now. I don't feel that old but i do love discounts so i own up to my age with no problem now, lol!
ReplyDeleteHmm, I love being 29 because it's not quiiiiiiite 30 so I can still say I am a 20-something ;) I
ReplyDeleteJan you always have such fantastic projects and patterns going on - I just LOVE it. Front Porch is a bit hit and I can see why. Thanks for always giving us tips and tricks and sharing your knowledge on your YouTube channel!! I'm at that "almost retired" age and I'm loving it -- about 2 years to go and I'm busy making plans for what I want to be when I grow up. I'm old enough to appreciate all that I have and this lovely country that we live in - and young enough to still be optimistic about the future!! Live is good... Hugs, Karen
ReplyDeleteI will be 61, and so excited because Retirement is just around the corner. Thought I work at a quilt shop and get to touch fabric. I still want to stay home and sew.
ReplyDeleteMy age allows me to still keep up with my toddler son (barely!), but I'm old enough to have some life experience wisdom. Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteI love my age and doing exercises with young people that could be my grandkids. And keeping up.
ReplyDeleteJust turned 50.....love it cause I'm alive! Jmh
ReplyDeleteYour Front Poarch is just my cupa tea. I love the soft spring colors and we so need a promise of spring this year.
ReplyDeleteI too love my age. I'm of the age I care not what others think of me as long as I hurt no one I will have fun. I think maybe I have been this way always.
I am more wiser now and more experienced with life dealings. Have more time to spend quilting.
ReplyDeleteI finally hit the age where I can appreciate the little things in life and know what is important and what can wait till tomorrow;)
ReplyDeleteDebbie

ReplyDeleteAlong with my age I've developed confidence and that feels so good!

ReplyDeleteI'm 44 about to turn 45. I think age is really just a number because I still feel like I'm 29 (for some reason I think that was a good year). My dad, who is 82, says that he is only 39!
ReplyDeleteI like being my age because I'm alive! :-)
ReplyDeleteI love my age because I can be retired and have the time to do everything I love especially quilt.
ReplyDeleteI like being the age I am because I am wiser and appreciate each new day. Thanks for the opportunity to win your fabric giveaway.

ReplyDelete79 feels like 49 in my mind. Having good health helps with a lively life style in my new Senior Coop.
ReplyDeleteI like being my age because people don't expect me to be training for my future career and engaged to a guy I've been with for six and a alf years already.
ReplyDeleteMy grandmother used to always say your age is just a number. She lived to be 102! She was a sewer too. That must be where I got the sewing gene from! I like my age because I'm retired & can sew whenever I feel like it.....pretty much.
ReplyDeleteI'm still surprised that I'm 73. I wonder what we are supposed to feel like at our varying ages. Hope it is for most of us being grateful we feel good and have an active life. Still wish my husband were here to enjoy life together.
ReplyDeleteBecause I am retired and can sew whenever I want.
ReplyDeleteAge is really a state of mind. I sure don't feel my age....except on certain days....I love being able to just do what I want and that's mostly quilting and embroidery.
ReplyDeleteI'm 48, frequently have tondo the math to remind myself whether its "46," "47" or "48"! My five year old reminds me of the energy of youth, but nothing beats having "been around the block a few times" for its raw wisdom!
ReplyDeleteI like my age because now I do whatever I want to do which is pretty much quilt all the time. I have friends and family on facebook say you quilt a lot! My reply is yep I do and its fun! ReplyDeleteI like being the age I am because I did all my really dumb things before people had camera phones and the internet.

ReplyDeleteI'm old enough to know better, but old enough to do what I want, regardless, and old enough to have beautiful granddaughters!
ReplyDeleteMy age? We have to talk about age in my last years in my 40's....Ok! I love being my age because with age comes wisdom and independence that youth and vitality just don't afford us. Besides, I don't have much choice, right? Love your giveaway and your site!
ReplyDeleteI love my age because I am old enough to have some experience under my belt but not to old to disregard that experience :)
ReplyDeleteBecause I have no say on the matter!
ReplyDeleteAge is just a number

ReplyDeleteThe older I get the closer to retirement - yippee.
ReplyDeleteI just turned 59 in December and as my present to me, I retired from my job as a guidance secretary at a middle school. I feel like I want to spend some time playing with my fabric on a day to day basis while I still can and create some beautiful quilts for friends and family. We never know what life will hand us so while I'm still physically able to, I want to enjoy life!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to play with a bundle of your fabric...
Peggy in SNOWY New Jersey
I like my age 33 because I feel like I am finally understanding what life is really all about. Love and family. And looking back at being a kid, going... I had no clue.
ReplyDeleteAt 50, I can say that I have learned a few things, but I'm still young enough to learn lots more! Thanks for the give away!
ReplyDeleteI just turned 49 on Ground Hogs Day! Yea!!! I'm happy for each and every day I have with my 14 yr old son and family. I had breast cancer at 40, my son was 6, I'm thankful for every day I have with him and I'm healthy, BONUS!!! I'm lucky!!! ;-> Toni Anne
ReplyDeleteAs my husband always tells me when I moan and creak "It's better then the alternative!" and I have to agree with him.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to accept my age...58...would it do any good to argue? ;-) Truthfully, I wouldn't care to turn back the clock. Once was enough!
ReplyDeleteCos I can afford the fabric I want (notice not need).
ReplyDeleteAt my age, I can sleep as long as I like and stay up as late as I like.....NO RULES!!!
ReplyDeleteI like being the age I am because, somehow, my children (4) are much more respectful of me and are always asking my advice (and sometimes taking it).

ReplyDeleteMuch less stress being older and wiser
ReplyDeleteI'm 50 this year…and I like it. I think. I'm still surprised at the idea of 50 (How the heck did the time go by SO FAST?)…but it's all good.
ReplyDeleteI will be 70 this year. There has never been an age I haven't loved. I am fortunate in ways too numerous to count.
ReplyDeleteI turned 56 yesterday. I love being 56 because it's younger than 57, lol.
ReplyDeleteI like being the age I am because I have enjoyed all the quilting advancements through the years. I first started quilting in 1980 so I have seen some exciting inventions.
ReplyDeleteI turned 60 in October and I think the older you get, the better life is! It just keeps getting better!!
ReplyDeleteI'm 59, and it's better than the alternative....every year is a blessing.
ReplyDeleteI like my age.. I have to, I can't change it. It's better to be happy with where you are in life, than complain.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the free pattern.
I'm 59, and am happy to be this age because I have a lot of freedom to live how I want to live. I can no longer (not that I ever could!) afford to spend my time doing things I don't want to do - I need to make every day count.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I'm smitten with your Front Porch line. It's one of my all-time favorite lines. I especially love the big geranium prints. The overall color combinations are wonderful also, and all the slate backgrounds are stunning.
I am 54 and loving it. At this age I have more time to do the things I want, like sew all day!
ReplyDeleteI love the age I am...66, because I'm retired and my days are pretty much my own! I love my exercise class, my volunteer work, and getting together with friends as well as all the time I have to work on fabric projects!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE being the age I am because I know WHO I am, I enjoy what I do, and I don't have to impress anyone. :D
ReplyDeleteSo what's wrong with being old? I'm a baby boomer and my 67 is my mom's 55. A friend once told me age is a number - pick one that was great and stay there so I just celebrated the 20th anniversary of my 47th birthday!
ReplyDeletejust love being 64 -- retired with lots of time for grandchildren, quilting, gardening or whatever I feel like doing. Also have had time to develop a bit more smarts and patience which really adds to enjoying life.
ReplyDeleteI love my age now because it's that great age where you can say no, I don't want to, and not feel super guilty about doing it. It's a fun age though because I now have grandchildren that I can totally spoil and not feel bad about doing it. That's what grandparents are for, right? LOL
ReplyDeleteI have earned my age and I try to be the best I can be!
ReplyDeleteJan, you crack me up! BTW love Front Porch. Salmon is a great color of pink! I do not consider you old, well seasoned...maybe.
ReplyDeleteYou favorite Pink Girl

ReplyDeleteI am the oldest in my house! My kids remind me all the time. My husband is only a year younger, but I remind him to respect his elders!
ReplyDeleteI like being the age I am, because it's better then the alternative (sorta funny!). Seriously, I've had many good years and many good memories and am hoping for many more.
ReplyDeleteI am 18, and I love my age because it is really fun to look forward to my future!
ReplyDeleteHi! I am 59, just ONE more winter and I will be 60! And can retire, after working overtime on my 57 and a half plan!
ReplyDeleteThanks to O, Moda and you for the great giveaway!
Take care, Leslie
I love my age since being 70+ lets me act old or young. I've been retired many years from teaching and to be able to stay in and do as I want, I love it.
ReplyDeleteHi Jan - I'm 68 and I like my age but I would like my body to go back to age 35 -40. I think I would get more done. But I will take what I have and do what I can. Love the fabric and the pattern. Nancy P.
ReplyDeletewhy do I enjoy being 36? Because I can enjoy another 24 years of paying the mortgage, because I only have 34 years until I retire? Erm... not thinking of anything here....
ReplyDeletei've always been a fan of your patterns and fabric. love your new fabric.
ReplyDeleteI am 49 and like being my age because I am certainly much smarter than when I was 19, and getting much closer to retirement when I quilt at will.
ReplyDeleteWell I'm 40 and it's fun to look back at where I have been but it is also the age that is opening up a whole other door. (Kids are graduating and so forth) Lots of changes to take place in the next few years. I'm just gonna put my seat belt on and go for the ride.
ReplyDeleteBeing 57, I seem to be more relaxed and able to enjoy life more.
ReplyDeleteI am not really liking my age; but, I am enjoying my time.at the moment. Feeling better than I have in ages! Thank you for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI am over retirement age and love that I have made it here. I can sleep till 7, stay in PJ's till noon and best of all no makeup. But really I am more active now than when I worked. So many things to do and so little time left. But very best thing is having time for grandchildren ages 3,5 and 6
ReplyDeleteLove that Front Porch fabric! I like my age because my kids are mostly independent (youngest is 20) and I have more time to quilt!

ReplyDeleteI am 60 and feel great about my age knowing who I am and what I want. Age is only a number.
ReplyDeleteI like my age because I have lived long enough to have had 3 beautiful children and 4 wonderful grandchildren whom I love very much. Also I have the best husband in the world and we have had lots of happy years together.
ReplyDeleteI like the age I am because I'm alive and I get to do and make things....when I'm not trying to keep up with my little kids--which are fun too.
ReplyDeleteI am not really liking 60 so far but think I will get used to it as the months go by. Just grateful that I am healthy and active so I can enjoy my new first grandbaby!
ReplyDeleteI am 61 and proud of it. I love being retired, I love being a grandmother, I love not trying to impress anymore, I love sewing whenever I want to.

ReplyDeleteI like my age because I'm legally considered an adult but I'm young enough that people don't expect me to act like one, lol
I like my age because I'm at the age where you realize you would rather leave the dust and quilt --- and that is what you do!! Lana
ReplyDeleteI like being this age....mid 60's because I don't have all the angst I had at a younger age. AND the Grand children make me happy.
ReplyDeleteEveryday is a gift so I my age makes me grateful for each and every gift I have been given!
