I'm not quite ready to stay outside and work in the garden all day.
A few months ago I met Patrick Lose in Iowa to film a segment of PBS's Love of Quilting. It was great fun and those segments are starting to air now.
Check with your local PBS station for times that they air. I think I may have already missed the show in Kansas City but they assure me that they
repeat so we're taping them all.

DeleteMy idea of the perfect garden is a cute appliqued pillow or small wall hanging. If it's the type planted in real dirt, a nice small flower patch by the back door is very appealing.
ReplyDeleteI moved from an apartment to a small house in October. I've been buying things for the yard. I bought a beautiful morning glory at the farmer's market to climb the chain link fence. Morning after planting only the top 5" were left. Rabbits!!

I have an old plastic birdbath that I have filled with soil and covered with some stones. I planted hen and chicks in it and made a stone stack pillar. We keep it on our deck, and sometimes it makes through our Michigan weather and sometimes not.
ReplyDeleteI have such fond memories of picking flowers and vegetables from my grandparents garden. We always picked fresh flowers in the morning and did the weeding. It instilled a love of beautiful flowers and of growing things that has lasted a lifetime.

ReplyDeleteI have the show on tape and just looked and it is the next airing, so can't wait to see the show. I am not the best gardener, I just plant things and hope they grow, lol. My dream would be to fill the yard with gardens and walkways, maybe a pond and gazebo, an oasis for me to hide in;)

We are growing onions for the first time from bulbs. They are up but not sure about how long it takes to actually have them be ready to pick. The squirrels are sure curious about them! ReplyDeleteI call myself a fair weather gardener. I love being in the garden when the sun is shining. I am teaching my grandchildren to start with seeds. Last year we grew sunflowers from seed to 10 feet. They were thrilled.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was just 18 years old, I win a local prize for the most beautiful balcony because of my plants. We lived in the 5th floor so it was an achivement hahahaha. ReplyDeleteI do square foot gardening and have a six foot fence to keep the deer out. Love tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, peas and squash. It will be a while before I can get in my northern WI garden but will start some seeds inside around April 1.
ReplyDeleteI live in Wisconsin and this time of year anticipate Spring. So I plant wheat grass seeds indoors and use special vessels such as tea cups and ornate bowls. It will go thick and lush . When I cut it with a scissors it smells like freshly cut lawn!

ReplyDeleteSo beautiful. I am mostly a native flower gardener. I love to plant things that attract hummingbirds, butterflies and birds. This year we are going to try straw bale gardening for our vegetables. We are tired of winter here also. The seed catalogs and our lovely project helps brighten the winter days.

There was almost no snow here this winter in Munich, germnay (yeah for that!) snd now there are a lot of snowdrops, crocuses and primroses out there. And I already palnt a few primroses with a narciss in a pot and so far no frost and they're looking great.-) Hope it stays that way!!!

ReplyDeleteI volunteer as a master gardener in my south Texas county, and this Saturday we start our spring program teaching children how to grow vegetables. It was so rewarding last fall watching them dig up their potatoes, and hunt for their green beans (which blended in with the plants so well.)

ReplyDeleteI used to be an avid gardener before I caught the quilting bug. I would hand paint all the signs to label the rows of vegetables. The signs included "yellow polka dot zucchini ", "Kim Radishian", "peas on Earth", "Fun-yuns " and more. It was great fun (except for the weeds)!

ReplyDeleteDespite having to fight off mosquitoes every spring and summer, I always look forward to the days when my daylilies start to bloom. I just might have to find a way to bring the flowers inside for the winter. Maybe appliqued onto a quilt!

ReplyDeleteI love to work in my gardens but the deer like it just as much. I hardly ever get to see the hostsa bloom as they are eaten off. Any solutions?
ReplyDeleteWe've had a little trouble with deer but bought a deer repellant to sprinkle around and through the rows. It worked pretty well.
DeleteGardening is very fulfilling work. It calms you as you prepare the ground and plant the seeds. The harvest is far away, but you are not impatient.

ReplyDeleteI remember one year my husband made boxes, 12ft X 4ft by about 8 in high. He out wire in the bottom due to gophers. This area had previously been the chickens yard but the coop had been moved. We added good dirt, more chicken compost and planted lots of veggies and sunflowers. Our sunflowers were 12 ft high that year! The tomatoes plants were 5 ft high!! It was the best garden we had ever had! We currently live toward the California Sierras so gardening has to be on our deck, but, we have 13 wonderful hens!

ReplyDeleteGarden House is as pretty as your Crossroads was! Just after the holidays my shopping cart had some trash in it from the previous shopper. When I looked, there was a broken stem of Christmas Cactus that still had a tiny bud on it. I rescued it and potted it at home and now it will soon bloom.

ReplyDeleteWe are moving into our newly remodeled home in a few weeks and we plan to plant succulents next to the house in the back yard. I'm also planning to plant a lemon tree, rhubarb, rosemary, sage, lavender, thyme and maybe even a lime tree. I have my work cut out for me.

ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty line of fabric! It's a very short gardening season where I live. I use raised beds with greenhouse toppers my husband built to grow veggies.
ReplyDeleteGardening has not been successful for us lately. In fact, last summer, our zucchini plant was the first to die--early in the summer.

ReplyDeleteWe've had a mild winter here on the southern tip of Vancouver Island so I've been planting a few seeds in the boxes on the railings of my deck. Lots of parsley, and lettuce soon I hope. The rain so far has been pretty daunting, hoping it hasn't washed the seeds away, or rotted them. We'll see how things turn out in a couple of weeks.

ReplyDeleteI am from Long Island, NY but love living in Knoxville because of the short winters and long spring and fall seasons! There is nothing like seeing the bulbs coming up and blooming in March. I am planning on planting lots of pretty and colorful pansies in pots and in the beds around the house next week.

Have had flower and veggie gardens in five different states where we've lived throughout the years! Our Growers' Outlet just opened, so I'll be taking a trip out there soon to buy plants for my barrels on the deck!

ReplyDelete2 years ago moved into a condo, so only have my patio to grow on now. I did tomatoes, peppers, and lots of herbs last year as well as some flowers. Glad there is a farmers market for me to buy other garden food!

ReplyDeleteSadly we are experiencing water restrictions in Cape Town so flowers in the garden are limited, but there is a miniature orchid inside and the Christmas Poinsettia is also still there. Hopefully 2016 will bring a better spring garden! Lovely giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI live in Michigan and a lady told me yesterday that she takes her geraniums out of the pots in the fall, shakes off the roots and puts them upside down in a brown paper bag. Hangs them from the ceiling in the basement. Come spring she replanted tthem and off they go! I'm gonna try this next year!

But when i am working in the garden i feel a bit "quilty" i am not working on my guilt. It is hard to choose were to spend mine precious time on. ReplyDeleteMy current garden has been a work in progress for the last 7 years and I have to say it is beyond the garden of my dreams. We created a fun layout for raised beds and included roses, flowers and herbs to go along with as many vegetables and strawberries as we can squeeze in. It is buzzing with bees and contented gardeners all Spring and Summer sometimes even into the winter months here in Northern California.
