Moda Blockheads Block #28 - Applique Pumpkin

To make this little pumpkin block First

1) Copy the pattern pieces onto Freezer Paper.

2). Cut out the shapes and iron onto your fabrics.

Then place the fabric on your sandpaper board and 

trace around the freezer paper pattern with an appropriate

colored pencil.

I use Sewline marking pencils because they give you a nice sharp stitching line.

You can get the sandpaper board at your local quilt shop, make your own or buy one at my store by clicking here.  Then go to the sidebar on the left and click on "notions" for both the sandpaper board and the marking pencils.

What the sandpaper board does is hold your fabric firmly in place 

so it doesn't stretch when you draw around the pattern.

Now the pattern on the fabric is exactly the same as the drawing.

Cut your fabric out using a 1/4" seam allowance - approximate.

Stitch the pumpkin center to the middle piece

using the basic appliqué stitch.  If you're uncertain about the stitch

click here to get to my tutorials and search for the Basic Applique stitch.

Now turn your pieces over and cut out the back of the middle piece behind the center.

(You only need to cut out the back pieces if you are going to hand quilt the block or your quilt.  If it's going to be machine quilted you can skip this step.)

Applique the middle piece to the pumpkin outside

and cut out behind the middle piece.

Which brings me to the answer about hand quilting.

Yes, one of the things I really like about these little blocks and my Table Stand Quilts 

which are only 12" x 25" is that I have time to quilt them.  And it's much easier to get small quilting stitches if you're not quilting through all those layers.

Now clip the curve of the top of the pumpkin

and baste it under.

I have been doing all of this while sitting as my husband watches TV.

After a bit Elizabeth wants on my lap.  She doesn't mind at all if I sometimes

set the sandpaper board on her back.  So Pep lifts her up and she keeps me warm while I stitch.

Back to the block, now baste under the bottom and lower sides of the stem

so you can appliqué it to the top of the pumpkin.

Now there's only the moon left and those points can be a challenge

Then quilt as desired and bind.
I made this into a little wallhanging with a neat pumpkin hanger
and stabilized it with a pin because it wouldn't hang straight.

As I was typing this, I realized I could hang it from the 

center of the pumpkin, not the stem and it would hang straight.

Ah well.......  I did but I didn't do the picture over.  It's getting late.
