Moda Blockhead #40

Cardinal on a Berry Branch
by Jan Patek
That's Me:)

To download the pattern click here.
And as usual I got to make another little block in order to show you how.
A lot of you probably know the routine by now but we'll go over it anyway.

First trace your patterns onto the matte side of the freezer paper.
Then cut them out and iron the shiny side to your fabrics.

Lay the fabric on your sandpaper board and
trace around the pattern with a marking pencil.
This is your stitching line.
Peel off the freezer paper.

Repeat with all of the patterns except the berry.
Clip the inside curve on the branch and
baste both edges under.

Do a running stitch around the outside of the berry,
put the freezer paper berry inside and draw the thread up around the paper.

Appliqué the branch and the berry to the background.

Baste under the top and the bottom of the cardinal.

Appliqué the wing to the back

Then appliqué the cardinal in place on the branch.
To learn how to appliqué the points (and there are a lot of them)
or to refresh go to https://youtu.be/whsjyGgS1Y4

Embroider his eye with 2 strands of cotton floss.

And then back to points with the star.
You use the same technique for all points, stars, birds beaks, tails, wings, leafs.
Once you learn how to do it, it becomes easier and easier.

Now quilt your little block

bind it and put a sleeve on the back for the hanger.

Make a comment, any comment you like and come back next week to see which one
the random number generator picked to
win a kit including a hanger.

There's another reason to COME TO MY BLOG NEXT WEEK -
Moda has generously donated a FABRIC GIVEAWAY for each of us and you need to GO TO EACH OF OUR BLOGS NEXT WEEK to enter.  Wow! 6 chances to win fabric.

For now, lets go see what the other designers have done with the my cardinal.
