First, I want to say how much I enjoyed reading your comments each night. Such a wide variety of gardens and experiences.
Ok - Now for the important stuff.
The winner of the Garden House Precuts was #53 -
I volunteer as a master gardener in my south Texas county, and this Saturday we start our spring program teaching children how to grow vegetables. It was so rewarding last fall watching them dig up their potatoes, and hunt for their green beans (which blended in with the plants so well.)
What a wonderful experience for you Lyn, and for the children you work with. I'm afraid all of my master gardening is done with bulbs and perennials, mostly on quilts.
If you will email your information to Tammie at janpatekquilts@centurylink.net or call her at 816-632-7632 we'll get your precuts out to you.
AND........
right after I posted the drawing for the precuts, I found out that our local PBS station KCPT will be showing the segment of Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting that I'm on, this Saturday, February 27th at 7:00 A.M.
One of my sons commented that quilters must be early risers.
Could be I said - but more likely we all have DVRs :).
Anyway, to celebrate we decided to give away a kit for the Garden House Pillow.
So here we go with making comments again.
I thought it would be fun to comment on making small projects and why you like them. I personally think they're great even thought I usually make much larger quilts.
Tammie suggested that I could have you comment on how much you like to take naps.
Pretty good idea.
So anyway, make a comment on either subject or just say "hi" and we'll do another drawing a week from Wednesday and post the winner.
Have a great week ladies.
I saw you on my PBS last Saturday. Well, I DVR'd it on Saturday anyway. It's on at 6:00 here. I love small projects for instant gratification, and because I do my own quilting, it's easier than a big quilt!! Thanks for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteMaking something small is wonderful when there are different aspects to the design. This way learning more than one concept. Lovely cushion. Happy Stitching.
ReplyDeleteI would love to attend one of your classes, are you ever coming to Idaho?
ReplyDeleteNot that I know of in the near future but there's always time. :)
DeleteMost of my large projects become small projects because I have trouble finishing them!
ReplyDeleteI love small projects because I can finish in one week...and they never become a UFO!! As far as a nap...I always say that I would like to 'read' for awhile...code word I need a NAP!haha
ReplyDeleteSmall projects are so fun because you get to the end quicker and can enjoy the finished item sooner.
ReplyDeleteSmall projects are so fun because you get to the end quicker and can enjoy the finished item sooner.
ReplyDeleteWhen I am hand quilting a big quilt, I work on it at night in front of the TV. I like to have smaller projects to work on during the day just for fun!
ReplyDeleteI love working on a smaller project, especially after finishing up a large quilt. With summer so close, I will be taking smaller projects to work on while watching my grandchildren play ball. Plus, naps are a good thing!
ReplyDeleteWhen I make a large project I sometimes get bored with what I am doing so small projects help keep everything interesting!
ReplyDeleteRecently made an oragami bow tie block table runner in red and creams! Perfect color at Christmas all the way through Valentine's Day! Also it is easier to quilt small projects!
ReplyDeleteI make quilt-a-longs with some of the bloggers. I, too generally make larger quilts.
ReplyDeleteI sure do wish my local PBS channel would show quilt shows. Ours seems to cater to kids and historians. Oh well. I make both large quilts and small quilts. Small quilts are great because I actually finish them! Hahaha!
ReplyDeleteI've only just made a few small things: a doll quilt and several hotpads. I enjoyed making the doll quilt and the quick finish (but I didn't enjoy hand quilting it). I didn't enjoy the hotpads.
ReplyDeleteI love naps!
Thanks for offering the kit for the pillow. I love it!

I saw your segment last Saturday on Fons and Porter and have recorded it for future reference. Patrick did a bang up job under your tutelage.
ReplyDeleteAs for naps, I take one every day. The joy of being retired.
Small projects = faster finishes (and more time left over for naps)! And pillows, in particular, are great for gifting, or for changing home decor in small ways.
ReplyDeleteI love little projects so I can try out new color combinations or techniques. (I'm running out of space for larger quilts, too!)
ReplyDeleteOf course there are those of us who like small projects and long naps and then wonder why no projects ever get done!!! PLN
ReplyDelete:) :) :) How true
DeleteI love making small projects. It is nice to have instant gratification.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Love the small projects for the gratification of finishing. It takes me soooo long to baste a larger quilt, then decide how to quilt it, then quilt it, and then bind it. I also like to try out new techniques on small projects.
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy taking naps, but I have to do it before noon, or I can't sleep at night! (smile)
ReplyDeletealas i do not get fons & porter on my local PBS but i like to make small projects as they are quick finishes and nearly instant gratification!
ReplyDeleteI don't take naps often but they are wonderful when I do! I like small projects to use in my home seasonally and for gifts. They also are gratifying to feeling of accomplishment. I'm going to see if your show will be here in Oregon too!
ReplyDeleteI love to take naps... always have!! I think my family loves for me to take naps too, otherwise I am grumpy!! Lol
ReplyDeleteAlmost all of my projects are small. There are just so many wonderful patterns I want to get to, I don't want to spend too much time on any one. As for naps, I start out with a cup of tea, a quilt, a good book & wake up a while later so happy.
ReplyDeleteI don't like taking naps at all. I always wake up grumpy. I'm better off just going to bed earlier. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love small quilts, and do enjoy making them. I am not good at taking naps -- unless I am watching TV in the evening -- that causes me to doze off every time. The pillow is so beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteSmall projects are awesome because they are quick finishes, so I actually fell like I accomplished something!
ReplyDeleteAlways have a small project that stays in my car. That way, when my husband wants to go *Sunday riding* I have a bit to stitch on as he gives a rolling commentary of the scenery. And if I stop by a friends I always have my project to take in and we can stitch together while catching up on our lives. Best to you, Ann in NC
ReplyDeleteI only WISH I could fit in a nap :o)) but there aren't enough hours in the day. Love your pillow!!
ReplyDeleteQuilts and naps are like peanut butter and jelly :o) They go together so nicely! I love making small quilts when my quilting time is limited but I also love my big quilts for the naps!
ReplyDeleteA small quilt is much easier to handle. I never seem to finish a large quilt. I am working on From my Heartand love seeing the quilt grow. Thanks Jan for the great patterns.
ReplyDeleteI learned to take Sunday naps from my dad. He'd lay out on the living room floor and snooze.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many quilts I want to make that it would take at least 25 lifetimes to complete them all!! making them on a smaller scale allows me to try new techniques and incorporate design elements that I like but have a completed project in less time. I love your pillow -- it makes me think of rainy years when the plants take off and grow in joyous abundance!
ReplyDeleteI love small projects because they are easy to take and work on at our Bee and get rave reviews. sepatsy1@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteI love al your work Jan and because of your tutorials, now I am applique. (I am sorry for my English. ) Love Wilma
ReplyDeleteSmall projects, such as mini quilts, are great because they can be finished quickly. Usually when I finish one, I can then go on to a larger quilt and hopefully, it doesn't become a UFO.hahaha
ReplyDeleteYour Garden House pillow is very sweet, Jan. Thanks for offering it as a giveaway.
There's a better chance the project will get finished if it small!!! And naps are my saving grace to make it thru the week.
ReplyDeleteI love small projects and have made several of your pillows! I always receive compliments when people see them. This new pillow is right up my alley....a classic Jan Patek design!
ReplyDeleteI love small projects. It is a quick finish and instant gratification. I wish I could take a nap for some reason I stay awake. I love this pillow. Hugs
ReplyDeleteYour patterns are fun to make, I like how you put the stars on a square.
ReplyDeleteI love small projects like pillows, bags or mini quilts because they are way faster to finish than big projects and I normally really finish them (unless my quilts they often land in the WIP or UFO stash;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm not so good at taking naps but I like to sleep long in the morning ... I'm a night owl not an early riser.
I like to work on small things while finishing something bigger
ReplyDeleteSmall projects give one a sense of accomplishment, and that is why I try to tackle small projects more often than not. In fact, I need a small project to get back into the quilting/sewing spirit! My motivation level has been almost non-existent since moving far away from home, and my mother-in-law/quilting buddy. Thank you for the chance!
ReplyDeleteOh, I missed the show this morning!!! I don't have DVR and I overslept. Up way too late last night embroidering my wool applique. I like smaller projects because I have a box full of large quilts waiting to be finished and I get discouraged because they take so long. I'm a beginner so where someone could do one of these in a few days, it takes me a few months!! I also love naps, more so than when I was a child! lol of course being close to 70 and very anemic could have something to do with it! LOL.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad could take a nap anywhere, anytime. He would come home for lunch and after a quick sandwich would lay down, out like a light and wake up 10 minutes later, rarin' to go. I once saw him lay down on a big rock in the sun and do the same thing!
ReplyDeleteI love small projects because of the sense of accomplishment. Right now I'm recovering/rehabbing from knee replacement. The small projects hold my attention longer.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy small projects because I have a better-than-average chance of completing them and enjoying the fruits of my labor. In that respect, small projects become stepping stones to larger projects.
ReplyDeleteSince I´´m always working on big projects, the little ones get finished first, and help me keep moving on! Love the Pillow...

I like small projects because they give me more immediate satisfaction, allow me to try new techniques or color combinations, and take up less space. I enjoy a nap now and then, especially on Sunday afternoons.
ReplyDeleteSometimes finding that small project can be harder than jumping into one that you know will take a long time. This pillow would be great to make for my daughter's birthday in May, she appreciates things I've made.
ReplyDeleteI do love all of your work, the colors, design, it's almost addicting . The pillow is so cute, would love to win. Good luck to all.
ReplyDeleteI like to make small projects because it leaves time in the day to take a nap....or just sleep in! Actually, I do tend to steer towards lap or bed quilts, but a small project is a nice change (and little pillows to go on a nicely quilted bed is perfect)!
ReplyDeleteI love to do a couple of small projects when I'm working on a large one. It helps break up the routine. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteSmaller projects fit better with my limited time. I should be retired by now and quilting full time but noooo, not so. Plus, the UFOs take up much less space in my closet than the full-size ones. Thanks for the give-away.
ReplyDeleteI like small quilts because I can still make them as scrappy as I want, use the last little bits of treasured prints, and find (almost) instant gratification. Well, a lot quicker than with a full-size quilt anyway! And there are dozens of ways to display them in your home or give as wonderful gifts.
