On Friday this week.
And aren't we all glad we didn't
live in the path of Helene.
Our prayers go out to all who did.
And thank you Samaratin's Purse and all
of the other agencies that have stepped in to help.
I don't get into politics often but I will tell you
that I was infuriated to learn that all the FEMA
money had been spent housing and feeding
illegal immigrants instead of being available
to take care of Americans. After all it
was taxpayer money,
On a more pleasant note, we had Pep's

but I'll have to go get a pattern and tell you who

Its Fall already and that means Thanksgiving
and Christmas will be here in no time.
While I'm working on my latest quilt
(chock full of basket blocks),
I had Tammy go up to the loft to find
me a Fall Tablestand and she came back
with
This is the front and I just love this turkey.
But before we get to Thanksgiving we have to have
Halloween.
that out, so this is the back.
I'm still working out getting to the kids houses but
I'll get there
One of my favorite things about Tablestands is
that I get to make 2 little quilts that kind of go
together but that can stand on their own.
Anyway, I hope you have a great week and
have fun with these quilts. And of course the
kits are on sale this week.

I just love whales.
When I was in California visiting my Uncle Fred
and Aunt Grace they asked me what I would like to
do. The first thing I told them was that I wanted to
go see the whales. It was awesome.

And in keeping with the occasion
the item on sale this week is
"Flags of the American Revolution"
The first flags adopted by our colonial forebears were symbolic of their struggles with the wilderness of the new land. Beavers, pine trees, rattlesnakes, anchors and various other insignia were affixed to different banners with mottoes such as "Hope," "Liberty," "Appeal to Heaven," or "Don't Tread on Me."
In the early days of the Revolution, there were colonial and regimental flags by the score. The Boston Liberty flag, consisting of nine alternate red and white horizontal stripes, flew over the Liberty Tree, a fine old elm in Hanover Square in Boston, where the Sons of Liberty met.
Still another was a white flag with a green pine tree and the inscription, "An Appeal to Heaven." This particular flag became familiar on the seas as the ensign of the cruisers commissioned by General Washington, and was noted by many English newspapers of the time. [Available from FlagLine.com.]
Flags with a rattlesnake theme also gained increasing prestige with colonists. The slogan "Don't Tread on Me" almost invariably appeared on rattlesnake flags. A flag of this type was the standard of the South Carolina Navy. Another, the Gadsden flag, consisted of a yellow field with a rattlesnake in a spiral coil, poised to strike, in the center. Below the snake was the motto, "Don't Tread on Me." [Available from FlagLine.com.]
Similar was the Culpepper flag, banner of the Minutemen of Culpepper (now spelled Culpeper) County, Virginia. It consisted of a white field with a rattlesnake in a spiral coil in the center. Above the rattlesnake was the legend "The Culpepper Minute Men" and below, the motto, "Liberty or Death" as well as "Don't Tread on Me." [Available from FlagLine.com.]
In December of 1775, an anonymous Philadelphia correspondent wrote to Bradford's Pennsylvania journal concerning the symbolic use of the snake. He began the letter by saying:
I recollected that her eye excelled in brightness that of any other animal, and that she has no eye-lids. She may, therefore, be esteemed an emblem of vigilance. She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders. She is, therefore, an emblem of magnanimity and true courage.
It was probably the deadly bite of the rattler, however, which was foremost in the minds of its designers, and the threatening slogan "Don't Tread on Me" added further significance to the design.
The Moultrie flag was the first distinctive American flag displayed in the South. It flew over the ramparts of the fort on Sullivan's Island, which lies in the channel leading to Charleston, South Carolina, when the British fleet attacked on June 28, 1776. The British ships bombarded the fort for 10 hours. But the garrison, consisting of some 375 regulars -- and a few militia, under the command of Col. William Moultrie, put up such a gallant defense that the British were forced to withdraw under cover of darkness. This victory saved the southern Colonies from invasion for another two years.
The flag was blue, as were the uniforms of the men of the garrison, and it bore a white crescent in the upper corner next to the staff, like the silver crescents the men wore on their caps, inscribed with the words "Liberty or Death." [Available from FlagLine.com.]
The Maritime Colony of Rhode Island had its own flag, which was carried at Brandywine, Trenton, and Yorktown. It bore an anchor, 13 stars, and the word "Hope." Its white stars in a blue field are believed by many to have influenced the design of our national flag. [Available from FlagLine.com.]
The Army preferred its regimental flags on the battlefield instead of the Stars and Stripes. A popular form of the U.S. flag that was used in battle had the obverse (front) of the Great Seal in the canton.
The Army also used the Stars and Stripes with 13 stars in a circle. The Stars and Stripes was officially used in Army artillery units in 1834, and in infantry units in 1842. [Available from FlagLine.com.]
If you go on line and find my book you'l find lots of history on the different flags. Until then, you can just follow the pattern, make the quilt and have a great 4th of July.

On Thursday this week.
It never rains but it pours
And boy did it pour.
In the middle of a heat wave our air conditioner went out.
Jake went to Lowes and bought small airconditioner,
Jeremy and he vented it (mainly Jeremy according to Jake) and
installed it in the living room.
We brought down 2 large fans from the loft and it's actually
cool in the front of the house. Kelly says it's cool even back in
her bedroom.
Meanwhile we found out that all of the sheet rock downstairs
was wet and moldy and needs to be torn out.
Jeremy thinks most of the water is coming in downstairs
at Pep's storage room and they need to get into it and stop
the leak, except that I don't have a key - Max has one and Jake
has one but I don't. I did point out that it's my house.
Anyway I will have to finish this gripping drama when
I get back from the beauty parlor.
For now, I will just tell you that the item on sale this week is
the Eagles & Roses BOM.

On Thursday this week.
Today I woke up dreaming that Pep was alive
so the first few minutes were fine
but then the day fell apart when I realized
that it was just a dream.
I'll be ok soon though because Tammy will
get here and I should get my second book
on dealing with grief by Dr. Hauk in the mail soon.
I got the 1st one and have read it through two or
three times and it really helps.
And while I'm at it, I tell you about the item
on sale this week.
It's the kit for the All American Tablestand.
Meantime, have the best week with the people and quilts that

And I think it's still Wednesday :)
Jan
Me in the loft with a group of ladies
who came to visit.
I don't remember who they are or when they came.
One of the things I have learned is that one of the first reactions
that people have after someone dies is shock. One moment your
loved one is alive and the next -- gone.
Its June so I need to post a new Vintage Book.
The book I have chosen is "Say It With Flowers" but
I can't remember how to get to a picture. I think I'm lucky
I can remember how to do this much. If you'll come back
next week Tammy will have been here to help me remember and
I'll have a picture of the cover and maybe one of the quilts inside.
Meantime, have the best week with the people and quilts that
you love.
Jan
On Thursday this week.
And my computer is moving at the speed of
molasses so I'm not sure how long this will be
but I really want to thank all of you who have
sent me sympathy after the loss of Pep.
After living with him for 55 years my life seems
incomplete without him. That book on Grief is awesome
and is helping with the pain. I miss him so much. Max's wife
pointed out that I had lost half of me. And I'll tell you that
I lost the half that can cook. As a cook, I'm a pretty good
quilter. I went down and spent a few days with them. We went out for
breakfast on Max's birthday and had Eggs Benedict which Pep
used to make.
Back to quilting, our special this week is Country Blessings and
we have a kit or two left.
It's April and pretty soon it will be May
which means the lawn needs to be cut.
Jeff isn't with us anymore for quite a few reasons,
the biggest of which was my chickens.
Since I only get 1 social security check now instead
of two, I couldn't afford to pay him by the month
so he decided not to shut up the chickens.
He didn't shut up the bantys or my layers. A raccoon
got into both houses and now I'm back to very baby
chickens.
riding lawnmower from Sears. We only used it a
couple of times because he mowed the lawn but it
was sitting in a shed out behind the barn. Two weeks
ago Tammy and her significant other decided to get it out
of the shed and get it in shape to start mowing.
It will be awhile. It has no battery, no tires and the
blades are missing. My son, Max called the Sheriff
and a deputy came out. We also found out that instead
of taking care of the trash, he was just taking it over the
hill and dumping it which is against the law.
That's enough bad news for today.
My grandson Jake had a friend who has been working
for his father's home improvement company and Jeremy
came out and is awesome. Besides helping with the new
babies, he mowed the front and side lawns with the
push mower Kelly brought with her when she moved in.
He also said that he lives in Cameron and to let him know
if we have a flat tire and he'll come out and fix it.
Thank you Jeremy and Thank you God.
Now for quilting new.
The special for this week is "The Collector Series BOM"
for 20% off.
On Friday this week.
but I never will. I really miss him.
Now back to why I blogged.
We had a drawing for the last kit
of the Bible Quilt and Tammy notified
the winner but we haven't heard from her.
Judith T was the winner. She needs to call
Tammy at 816-632-7632 and give us her information
so we can send it to her. If, for some reason she doesn't
get in touch with us by the end of this week, we'll
pick a different number.
Now for this week.
I have been watching those students, not only at
Columbia College, but across the nation.
demonstrate and do things like burn the flag.
And I am disgusted.
This is "America for Me."
We are out of kits for it but we can
Years ago I read somewhere that you
need 3 things in life to be happy.
1. Someone to love
2. Something to do
and
3. Something to look forward to.
My #1
Closing prayer at the Memorial.
"God, we believe that our loved ones
are not lost to us, even in death.
They are remembered in our activities,
in our thoughts and in some decisions, we
consider what they would have said."
When I get too stressed out, I can still hear Pep
say, "Take a buspar, Jan and have a beer."
(buspar is a mild anti anxiety pill my doctor prescribed).
I do and it always helps. Remembering him always
helps. He has left an indelible imprint in my heart and memory.
As long as I live, he lives. So grant me that promised peace
that goes beyond, even my understanding in days to come."
And on that note, I will go to my #2 which is always quilting.
On special today is a kit for the Bible Quilt.
We only have one so there may be some substitutions.
Make a comment below to enter the drawing and
on Monday we will number them and have Zoie blind pick a number.
If you want to buy a pattern for the quilt the pattern is on
special too. If you win the drawing for the kit, we will refund
you the cost of the pattern.
You can go to the store to buy a pattern by clicking here
Good luck - this is one of my favorite quilts and one I will always
treasure.
This one will be short but I'll post another tomorrow.
Yesterday was the memorial service at
Research Hospital for Pep and a few others that
died there at about the same time.
Since people were of different denominations
and religions, they had music and readings from Islam,
Jewish/Christian and Buddhist sources.
Zoie came and so did Nina/Maxwell and Valerie
as well as Bob Smith (Smitty) and Neal Stack
who both work with Pep for years.
Pep and Smitty worked together first at Baptist
and then at Research for around 30 years and
Stack came shortly after. They were armed security so
every year they all had to qualify with the Kansas City
police department. The hospital had a trophy where
they posted the top 3 winners and every year it was
Patek, Smith & Stack. Everyone said they cheated
because they came to the farm to practice.
We all brought pictures of Pep
Here's the picture Zoie brought.
On Friday this week.
This has been quite a week
and I haven't been fond of it.
When I got up this morning I found
my beloved puppy Dobby had died during
the night. Tammy and Willy came
shortly and Willy buried him in our pet
cemetery behind the barn. I miss him
already and so does Elizabeth.
On a somewhat happier note, Willy
got the baby chickens moved to their new
house and they are cozy and safe and sound.
Tammy will get here soon and help me
remember how to download the pictures so
I can show them to you.
Meanwhile our sale item this week is the
table stand kit for "April Please"
On Thursday again :)
I'm getting good at this ...
Pep worked for Health Midwest for years
First at Baptist Hospital where he was a
Security Supervisor and when it closed he
transferred to Research Hospital. Altogether,
between the 2 hospitals he worked there for around
35 years. He was on the Midnight Shift where he could either
have a very quiet night or a very active and sometimes
violent night. Dealing with people on PCP can be interesting .
For those of you who don't know Kansas
City, both hospitals are close to "the hood".
When he fell and collapsed a lung, we called 911 and they
took him to the hospital in Cameron who said he needed to
go to a larger hospital as they weren't equipped to handle it so
we life flighted him to Research. I think I have already
said that he was in intensive care for 2 weeks before he
went to join Jesus in heaven.
On April 9th at 3:00 pm, Research is having a
"Celebration of Life" memorial for him. I've notified the men
that worked with him and Zoie and I will go too. The boys have already
taken so much time off that they will wait for the memorial we will
have here. I'll tell you about that later. For right now, I any of you
want to come, just let Tammy know so I can inform Research as they're
providing munchies.
Someone once said - "In order to be happy you need 3 things -
1. Someone to love
2. Something to do and
3. Something to look forward to"
I lost my #1, I do have my quilting and eventually I will
join him in heaven. I did promise Zoie that it would be
quite awhile from now though.
For right now - we do have a kit on sale this week, one
of my spring favorites.
It's Beeskeps and Violets
and you can go to the store to get your copy
by clicking here.
On Wednesday this week even....
When dad was in intensive care at Research for
2 weeks I went to the hospital every day to sit with
him and, of course, I took some stitching to do. I
was working on Adleys Quilt at the time but the blocks
And I Hope you enjoyed the last 2 days
of weather because it seems to have
drastically changed. I must say I definitely
prefer the 52 degree days instead of the
16 degree days. Nina was here on the last
52 degree day and said she wasn't looking
forward to the migraine that was coming
with the change in the barometric
pressure. I don't blame her. I'm really glad
that migraines aren't on my list of ailments
On to a more pleasant subject.
We're having a Rufus BOGO this week.
Those of you who have been with me for
awhile know that before Mufin I had an awesome
cat named Rufus. He was white and grey and had
a very attractive personality as well as being
an ever so cute kitty.
Our special this week is the kit for
Rufus in the Garden
