Here is our "Finally Fall" Quilt Kit -
our Mini Quilt Club offering this Fall,
featuring some of my favorite themes -
houses - pumpkins - a cat & a crow and
made out of one of my favorite fabric lines - Sycamore.

And Fall is really welcome after all the heat this summer.

What is not quite so welcome to my younger grandsons is



"School Days".
The quilt is welcome but the reality is not.

All 5 of the younger ones are going to new schools this fall and
they start this week.
It's exciting and stressful at the same time.
New beginnings always are.
Prayers and hugs for them all.

Anyway the quilt kit is on sale this week to mark the occasion.

Speaking of occasions - we have a winner to my Sleigh Bells book.
I love reading all of the comments and wish you all could win but
the Random Number Generator picked Carmen (Quilt 101) who said

This is my quilt Sleigh Bells.  

It was a Mystery Quilt one year so you had to 

get the kit each month in order to make the quilt.

Now Martingale has done an awesome job of

publishing a book full of pictures of each block 

along with the patterns.

I am really happy - they did a wonderful job.

Thanks Martingale.  :)

I got an email awhile ago asking for the name of a quilt a lady had seen.

She described it as having

"a house and a tree and a cat".

I really couldn't think at the time but 

it might be this one.

  If so it is Cherry Tree Lane.

I decided to put this on the blog because by the time I

thought of it, I had, of course, lost the woman's email.  

Back to  SLEIGH BELLS.

The first Moda Blockheads in August

And it's "With a Plus"

I always have to go check on what she's doing 

because she's my Blockhead Buddy. 

I'm not sure whether that's the right term or not but I 

picked her to join Blockheads because I have

always loved her work.

Right now she seems to be doing each block in Minick/Simpson 

fabric and also in a Bella Solid.  

They're really neat.

Besides doing Laurie's block last week I went to

Oklahoma City to give lectures and teach a workshop 

with the Central Oklahoma Quilt Guild,
a very nice group of ladies.
And as usual, I forgot to take pictures - you'd
think that by now - after all these years of
blogging- that I would remember.
They're a very active Guild with all sorts of goings on
and lots of things to do.
If you're in the area and get a chance to meet with them, do.

Back at home the dogs and chickens were really
glad to see me when I finally got here.
Pep said that Dobby and Elizabeth sat on the hill all day and
waited for the van to come home.
And Dobby didn't eat the entire time I was gone.
(He's one chubby little Corgi so it probably was good for him.)

My Turn for Moda Wednesday

Block #8

Pineapple Block

And now I'm going to tell you to only somewhat 

follow the directions on the pattern.

It's going to tell you to

3. Position appliqé A on the background square, referring to the key block diagram. Pin or baste to the background and appliqué in place. In the same manner appliqué all shapes in numerical order.

That will work but it's not quite the way I do it 

and it has some drawbacks that I'll explain later.

So ...... to back up - cut your pattern out of freezer paper

and iron to the right side of your fabric.

Cut the patterns out of the fabric adding 1/4" seam allowance.

Now baste under the top of the pineapple shape.

We're going to appliqué the marking to the pineapple and 

this will give us a better idea of where to put them. 

Baste under the top of each of pieces C  thru G.

Lay them on the pineapple with the basted top touching

the bottom of the next piece's seam allowance.

Put a dot of glue on the back of each piece and put

the piece on the pineapple body.

Applique Pieces C thru G to the pineapple.

These aren't the sharp, sharp points like a star has

but the principal is the same.

Now that the pineapple body is done 

we turn to the top and baste under both sides.

Applique the pineapple body to the top.

With your pineapple in one piece, 

you can appliqué it to the background.

I almost always sew my multiple piece appliqués together

before sewing them onto the background for multiple reasons.

1) It easier to work with small pieces

2).  If you decide you want a different color background 

or you don't like where it is on the background

it's much easier to take the pineapple off and change things.

3).  It you're hand quilting the item, you can cut the background out

behind your appliqué to get the small quilting stitches you desire.

That's how I do it 

and

It's your quilt---do it the way that is most comfortable for you.

To appliqué my 6" Pineapple Block 

I have been using my Lap App.

This is the cover I made for it using the pattern that came with it.

It's great.

You can sit it on your lap and adjust it.

It has a sandpaper board,

place to keep 3 spools of thread handy and

a little magnet for your needle or small scissors.

I'm putting it on sale this week - first come, first serve.

We'll fill all of the orders but may have to backorder some if we run out.

in northwest Missouri it is ........H O T

I always say that after my first real tomato I am

ready for a hard freeze.

Well, I'm ready.

Probably most of our neighbors who farm for a living

aren't quite as ready as I am so I content myself

by thinking of FALL.

Have I mentioned before that piecing is not my first love?

I almost left it this way because I like it too but decided to take it

apart and put it back together Betsy's way.

July 4th, 2018 & Moda Blockheads II, Block #5

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY

Hope you have a safe one.

The kids (kids- one is 47 and one is 43 but they'll always be my kids). 

Anyway their work schedules didn't agree so Brian and his wife and 4

came up on Saturday and Max and his 2 kids - his wife had to work - 

came up on Sunday.

There were lots and lots of big booming noises and a

heavy downpour Saturday night so Pep relaxed a little

about fire.

I think today I will just sit and stitch while Pep watches TV.

And since it's the 4th of July it seemed like a good time to

put my BOM pattern "Flags of the American Revolution" on sale.

Pep and I just watched a series on John Adams and the Revolution 

and it was awesome.  

The pattern includes comments on each flag and why it is included.

The center eagle came from an antique quilt.

Pep says it looks like a turkey that was run over by a truck.

That would be appropriate as Benjamin Franklin

thought our national bird should be a turkey - not an eagle.
