Moda's having a "Notions" blog hop and it's really fun to read what everyone's favorite tools are.
Today was my day.
Hop on over and see what we all picked by clicking here. Tell me what you're favorite notions are and I'll have a drawing Friday for a free Farmer's Market Layer Cake. I just finished designing the Featured Fabric quilt out of Farmer's Market and am in love with it all over again.
Well I already live on an island off the north coast of Scotland, so it definitely is not easy to get help when needed. I rely on my IPad, so that I can go onto all the blogs and YouTube to see what everyone is doing, but I suppose that can't be termed a notion. I couldn't sew without my thimble, my size ten sharps and my home-made sandpaper board for marking my patterns.
ReplyDeleteLove the blog!
Hmmm, favorite notions...good seam ripper, good cotton thread and light :-) does light count? I have one of those bendable lights on my Bernina and an Ott light over my shoulder now when I sew at my machine. It really helps! And I would so LOVE to win a Farmer's Market layer cake. I have really loved Aunt Audra's Iris Garden too!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is a beefy stiletto that helps me keep seam allowances going the right direction when I sew across them. I also love the little light I got at Ikea that helps brighten the bed of my sewing machine.
ReplyDeleteMy Clover seam ripper, seems like I've been using it alot lately.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite notions are my bright light that attaches to my sewing machine, my iron and my Frixion marking pen.
ReplyDeleteMy stiletto and my seam ripper are my 'best friends'! They are both in constant use!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite that I use the most is my ruler with the diagonal line for squaring up, I like to make them larger and then cut down, considering i can't sew a straight line, lol. I have heard of the sand paper board and sounds like a nice tool to have.

HI! REALLY LIKE MY LITTLE CLEAR 6" RULER NEAR THE MACHINE!
ReplyDeleteTHANKS FOR SHARING!

I love my little scissors, they are pretty and great for cutting the little threads while piecing, I also love my rotary cutter and of course a nice sharp seam ripper. It was fun to read about what other stitchers use. Your sand paper board sounds like something I would like to use.
ReplyDeleteI love ALL my scissors...I have a passion for them and they are everywhere! :) I also love the new Bloc Loc rulers. They make 1/2 square triangles and flying geese pure perfection!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite notions...well considering that I am a collector of sewing gadgets and tools it would be my Clover seam ripper, my Olfa rotary cutter, my many and varied acrylic rulers, my blue pen that washed out, my rotating 12 inch cutting mat, my scissors, my needle threader from Clover, my light box...is that enough?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite notions are my seam ripper and a pair of Gingher embroidery scissors that are great for snipping threads.
ReplyDeleteI have several notions that I like, my applique needles by Piecemaker, size 24 embroidery needles & threader for this needle and the rotary cutter to name a few. Thanks for taking part in this hop.
ReplyDeleteI embroider alot so I would say my needles and my hoop. Also can't get along without my cheater glasses.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, I love what you do! Your tutorials are wonderful too!
Really fine straight pins with glass heads that won't melt when they get near my iron!
ReplyDeleteOh there are so many notions that I love and use all the time. I guess if I had to pick one that I wouldn't want to do without it would be my rotary cutter!
ReplyDeleteMy latest favorite notion is the Clover rubber-metal-tipped thimble. Gosh! It actually stays on my finger!! And the Angler 2 for sewing anything diagonal on my machine; things get lined up perfectly. Thanks for the chance Julierose
ReplyDeleteI love my Kelmscott Designs needle minders, because using them is the only thing that prevents me from sticking my needles in the couch. DH was never too pleased when I did that! I wrote down Sewline Marking Pencils--I'll keep an eye out for them! I am really enjoying applique lately but still need to figure out my tried & true tools.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite notion is the Clover needle threader. As I mature I find the my eyesight is not as sharp as it used to be and I love that we have all of these options to assist us in doing what we love.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite notion is my rotary cutter, rulers and mat, the greatest invention of all time!! I realize that is three items, but they work together so I will count them as one!!
ReplyDeleteRotary cutter is first. Then seam ripper, white chalk pens, skinny pins and double sided ones too. So many things to help our quilting! Thanks for the chance to win.

There are so many awesome sewing notions out there, and the number is continually growing, but one old-fashioned notion that I frequently reach for is my sewing gauge... low tech but very useful.
ReplyDeleteMy bamboo stick. I like the pointed end to turn small pieces under, and I like the rounded end to push out applique shapes.
ReplyDeleteIt would have to be my thimble. I bought it so long ago I don't even remember the maker! It was reccomended by a quilt shop on the Oregon coast when I was struggling with hand quilting my first quilt. It is longer then a normal thimble. And it is open where your nail is. Its comfortable and I love it!
ReplyDeleteToday my favourite notion (if a sewing foot is a notion) is my quarter-inch with flange sewing foot for my Bernina. I was doing a jelly roll race and it made my sewing fly!
ReplyDeleteIf I can't have that, then it is my rotary cutter, mat and ruler combo as one needs all three together.
My favorite notion is a Pilot Frixion erasable pen! These are great to use, just draw on and iron off - works like a charm when embroidering, or marking a quilting pattern on your quilt top. Just hit a warm iron to it and the marks come right off!
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are Roxine glue and Karen Kay Buckley scissors. Also, a must is soft fuse for all my projects ! Thanks for your tips.
ReplyDeleteMy fav's are sewing gauge, frixion pens for marking, stiletto to guide fabric and iron is that counts...
ReplyDeletemy three favorite notions are the Clover desk needle threader, the Sewline mechanical pencil, and the sandpaper board. These are all essential to me when doing handwork.
ReplyDeleteI love my rotary cutter/quilting rulers/cutting mat... imagine how harder it would be without them!
ReplyDeleteLike you Jan I'd have to have my SewLine pencil, also good needles/threader and really great scissors! Throw in a bit o' chocolate, a cup of tea & Ravi Shankar for tunes & I'd be happy as a clam on any island! Ha!
ReplyDeleteJust can't live without my seem ripper...love my rotary cutter too! And who can quilt without some music!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite notion is my seam ripper. It's saved me from throwing a frustrating mistake out the window, many a time!

Years ago, on vacation in Lake Chelan, WA I got stuck while sewing a project I had brought along. I stumbled upon a little friendly quilt shop in the quaint downtown area of Chelan and chatted with the store owner, who happily looked at my project, helped me think through the solution to the problem I had created and got me back on track. I was brand new to sewing, and didn't have a clue. She mentioned using a seam ripper to back out of the mistake... I pulled a cheap plastic thing out, "Is that what this thing is?" I asked, like an idiot. Smiling, she showed me the Clover seam ripper, it was like a Cadillac! I have loved that ripper since the day I bought it! I still use the same one, it's still sharp and so comfortable to hold while I pick. I also saw a quilt in her window that day, which inspired me to learn to quilt. This last trip, I stopped by her shop and got that pattern, soon I will be good enough to make it. Frogs love to quilt! RRRRIPIT
ReplyDeleteI'd have to say my Clover size 12 quilting needles and the Dritz needle pullers (the little round rubber circles) that can grip a tiny needle loaded with way too many stitches on it!
ReplyDeletefavorite notion... just an old thimble. Thanks for a chance to win. I think I need a sand board like you have. Janita
ReplyDeleteMy favorite are my rotary cutter and rulers.
