Now with Market looming and quilts still needing to be hand quilted

(my Welcome quilt) I need to stop and say a word about 

Over the Meadow.

I was asked by The Quilting Company to film this BOM.

They were to release it and do whatever was necessary to get

the patterns and fabric to the customers.

We have recently found out that apparently Keepsake Quilting 

that was doing the kits was sold to another company

and that company is not sending people the last half of the kits

or patterns.

I don't have the fabric so I can't help with that but I can send

you the last half of the patterns.

I'm not going to Market this fall for the first time in years

due to health issues but the quilts are going.

As soon as I get things for Market tied up I will put together

the last half of the patterns into a file and put it in the store for 1/2 price.

I'm sorry for your inconvenience and stress but we'll get you your quilt and assure

Moda Blockheads - Blocks 23 & 24

Anyway, this weeks 6" pieced blocks are

If you follow my work at all, you know that I much

prefer applique to piecing.

And if you can count better than I did last week you

can see that there are 56 or 57 pieces in each

6" block.  This is not at all my cup of tea.

So I followed the example of fellow designer Lisa Bongean

and designed 2 Alternate blocks for us.

I won't go through all the steps for the appliqué because I did

most of the Freezer Paper steps last week.

Draw the head

Draw the pattern pieces on the matte side of the freezer paper

and cut out exactly on the line.  This is your stitching line.

Iron the shiny side of the paper to the appropriate fabric.

Cut the head circle and the hair with about 3/8 " seam allowance.

Clip the hair piece in the center up to the line

and stitch the hair to the head.

Trim the hair away from the top of the head.

Now do a running (or basting) stitch 

along the outer edge of the head. 

Put the paper pattern back into the 

fabric head and pull your thread until

the fabric fits snugly around the paper.

Backstitch and knot your thread.

Baste under the edge of the wings and dress.
Slip the wings under the top curve of the dress
and stitch to the dress.
Baste under the edges of the arm and appliqué to the dress.



Baste under the end of the dress and
the edges of the feet.
Slip the feet under the edge of the dress
and stitch to dress.

Appliqué the star in place.

The 2nd Alternate block is a 6" Watering can.

Go to the top and click on the link 

to download the pattern.

After you've cut out the body of the can

appliqué the star in place, then baste under the 

sides, top and bottom of the can 

Cut out the handles

And baste under any ends that will slide under the body.

Cut the spout out of Freezer paper and fabric.
Do a running stitch around the outer edge of
the fabric like you did for the angel's head.
Put the paper back in and pull the thread until
the fabric is snugly around the paper.

Backstitch and knot the thread.

Baste under the edges of the spout and appliqué the

end in place.

Applique the handles and spout to the 

body of the watering can.

Now turn the fabric can over and dot with glue.

Clip inside curves on the handle and appliqué 

your Watering Can in place.

And for those of you who are new to my form of 

Freezer Paper Needleturn Applique I'll go through 

some of the steps.

First, cut a 6 1/2" background square.

Then trace the circle from the pattern page on the matte side 

of Freezer Paper and cut it out.

Iron the circle shiny side down to the back of the fabric 

you chose for the circle.

Cut a fabric circle out with approximately 3/8" seam allowance.

Now, do a running stitch - a long loose stitch like a basting stitch -

around the edge of the fabric circle.

Your paper circle will probably come loose but that's OK.

When you complete the running stitch place the paper 

circle back inside the fabric circle

and pull the end of the thread so that the 

fabric comes up around the paper.

With a circle this size you may have to pull

from both ends of the thread (from the knot and the needle)

to get an even distribution around the circle.

Then tie the ends or make a backstitch to secure the thread.

Now take appliglue and dot around the outside edge.  I use a toothpick 

to dot the glue because I don't want any glue on the paper.

Now put the background square on a level surface 

(I'm using my Lap App) and press the circle firmly in place.

Set the background and circle aside to let the glue dry

while you deal with the star.

                                      

Trace the star from the pattern onto the matte side of Freezer Paper.

                                         
                                     

Cut it out exactly on the line and 

iron the shiny side of the paper to your star fabric.

Lay your fabric on a sandpaper board to 

hold it in place and trace around the pattern edges 

with a sharp marker.

This is your stitching line.

Cut the star out of the fabric with a 

1/4" seam allowance (approximate).

Mark the top of the star in the seam allowance.

Turn the block over and carefully make a slit to remove

the paper circle.  If you are hand quilting the block, 

you probably will want to remove the 

background fabric behind the circle also.

Now appliqué the star to the circle.
